Cummins Diesel Engine Serial Numbers

Look at your rocker cover: you’ll probably find your Cummins ISB engine serial number. You might also find it on the side of the gear housing. If you have a Cummins ISM engine, the serial number is on the rocker housing on the fuel pump side.

How do I identify my Cummins Engine?

Do you need replacement parts for your Cummins diesel engine? You’ll need your engine serial number (ESN) to ensure a product fits your engine.

If you don’t know how to perform a Cummins serial number lookup, we’ll show you where to find the ESN on your Cummins applications.

How to Perform a Cummins Engine Serial Number Lookup

Cummins engines have their serial number on the data plate. An engine’s data plate can be a great reference; it often includes additional information, including CPL, horsepower, and RPM rating. Unfortunately, finding the data plate can be tricky; its location changes depending on the engine model. You can check your owner’s manual for its location. If you don’t have a physical owner’s manual, you can access Cummins Quickserve for a digital copy.

If you don’t have an owner’s manual or access to Quickserve for a Cummins engine number lookup, here are the locations for the data place on some popular engine models.

  • Cummins ISB: either the rocker cover or the side of the gear housing
  • Cummins ISC and ISL: top side of the gear housing
  • Cummins ISM: rocker housing, towards the fuel pump side of the engine
  • Cummins ISX: top of the rocker lever cover
  • Cummins QSK45 and QSK60: rear of the engine block

Are you unable to find the data plate, or don’t see your engine model listed? That’s okay. Cummins stamps the engine serial number onto the passenger side of the engine block on all models.

How Do I Identify My Cummins Engine?

Diesel Pro Power says Cummins ISB engine serial numbers are commonly on the rocker cover. Sometimes they’re printed on the side of the gear housing. If you have a Cummins ISM engine, you’ll find the numbers on the rocker housing on the fuel pump side.

Cummins Engine Serial Number Format

Cummins engine serial numbers look more like classic serial numbers than Caterpillar ESNs. Cummins ESNs are eight digits and only use numbers. They have a numerical sequence based on which engine came first off the assembly line. There are no special designations for particular models.

Cummins engines do have a unique feature: a CPL. The CPL (Critical Parts List) names all the engine’s critical parts. Multiple engines can have the same CPLs, so there are fewer CPLs than ESNs. When ordering major engine parts, providing a CPL works just as well as supplying an ESN.

The Importance of Your Cummins Engine Serial Number

Finding and identifying your ESN can be a hassle, but knowing your ESN is crucial when ordering diesel engine parts. You may get by without a serial number if you’re ordering an individual part or two, but if you want something like a rebuild kit, then an ESN is necessary. We can use an ESN to look up all the exact parts used to build your engine and know whether we’re supplying you with the correct stuff. That’s why you need to perform a Cummins engine serial number lookup and have it on hand while ordering parts.

You’ll see a box under the price on some of our product pages. One of the fields in this box lets you input your Engine Serial Number. If you place an order without inputting your ESN, we’ll call you and request it. If your ESN is needed for an ordered part, we’ll always request it before processing an order. You don’t want the wrong parts, and we don’t want to send them to you either.

FAQs About Cummins Engine Lookup
Q: Where can I find the serial number on my Cummins engine?

A. The location of the engine serial number (ESN) varies by model:

  • ISB: Typically on the rocker cover or the side of the gear housing.
  • ISC and ISL: On the top side of the gear housing.
  • ISM: Located on the rocker housing, towards the fuel pump side.
  • ISX: Found on top of the rocker lever cover.
  • QSK45 and QSK60: At the rear of the engine block.

If the data plate is missing or unreadable, Cummins also stamps the ESN into the passenger side of the engine block for all models.

Q. What does the Cummins engine serial number look like?

A. Cummins ESNs are eight-digit numbers composed solely of digits, assigned sequentially based on the order of production. They do not include special designations for particular models.

Q. What is a Cummins CPL number, and how is it different from the serial number?

A. The CPL (Critical Parts List) is a unique identifier for a group of engines that share the same critical parts and configurations. While multiple engines can have the same CPL, each engine has a unique ESN. When ordering major engine parts, providing either the CPL or ESN ensures compatibility.

Q. Why is it important to know my Cummins engine serial number?

A. Knowing your ESN is crucial when ordering replacement parts, especially for rebuild kits. The ESN allows suppliers to identify the exact components your engine was built with, ensuring you receive the correct parts and avoid potential mismatches.

Q. What should I do if I can’t locate my engine’s serial number?

A. If you’re unable to find the ESN on the data plate or stamped on the engine block, consult your owner’s manual for guidance. Additionally, accessing Cummins QuickServe can provide a digital copy of the owner’s manual and further assistance in locating the ESN.
