It starts out as two pieces. But, the forged-steel crown needs to be kept cool during operation, so it has to have some cooling.
So, there’s a channel cut into the upper and another cut in the lower, which, when friction welded, creates a passage through the piston that the piston cooling nozzle sprays to keep the piston crown at the perfect temperature.
Additionally, it’s a heavy-duty piston with graphite-coated skirts for abrasion resistance, making it state of the art.
It’s the kind of top-of-the-line component that you want to keep your engine running at its best.
What Else Is In the Kit?
This kit is more than just the pistons, though. You’ll also be getting:

Do I Need an Inframe or Out-of-Frame?
In some cases, it might be hard to decide if you need an inframe kit or an out-of-frame.
If you’re doing a rebuild and want to leave the engine in the truck, you’ll want the inframe, which comes with the complete head gasket set and pan gasket set.
If you have other issues, like a front cover leaking, your oil cooler needs to be replaced or the bell housings have come off, you’ll probably want the out-of-frame kit. This will give you everything you need to take the engine apart completely, reseal it and put it back together.
