When you're looking for a rebuild kit for your CAT engine, you need to have your engine serial number to ensure you're getting a kit that fits your engine properly.
CAT engines are actually pretty consistent as to where you can find your ESN. It should be on the dataplate located on the driver side of the valve cover. The engine serial number itself follows a similar format amongst the engines as well.
Usually, the CAT ESN a three-character prefix (6NZ, MBN, etc.) followed by 7 digits. It's likely you've heard engines referred to simply by their prefix. This is especially true of the more popular applications, like the 6NZ. Knowing this, it's easier for you to identify which number is actually your ESN.
Even though it might be annoying to have to find your ESN, it can help save you a lot of difficulty later on. With your ESN, you can be sure that you're getting the right parts for your engine. This will save you time and money later, as you won't have to worry about re-ordering and shipping back parts.
