Caterpillar C15 ACERT Diesel Engine Camshaft Problems

Is the camshaft in your CAT C15 ACERT diesel engine performing correctly? It's essential that this component operates properly for your engine to function as it should. Each part of the camshaft must perform their functions at precise timing in relation to the motion of the piston. If they don't, it could spell disaster for your diesel engine.

If your cam fails, it will likely have a noticeable impact on the function of your engine. But you might still be questioning if the engine problems are caused by your camshaft or a different failure. We've put together a list of symptoms to help you identify when the camshaft of your C15 ACERT has failed.

Causes of a Failed CAT C15 ACERT Camshaft

If your camshaft has failed, you're likely wondering what caused the failure in the first place. There are several things that could cause problems for your cam.

Pitting, for example, can affect the operation of your camshaft. This can be normal wear on the lobes just from hours of operation. It could also be the result of loose debris from a past engine failure. That's why it's important to ensure that everything is clean on install, including the oil passageways. Dirt and debris left in the engine can cause damage to both the camshaft and cam bearings.

Your cam failure might also be caused by a lack of lubrication. This is often the result of blocked passages. If this occurs, you'll likely begin to notice wear patterns. The high heat and friction caused by this problem can ruin bearings or even break the cam cap.

It's also possible to have an improperly functioning lifter gouge the lobes. The lifter could be malfunctioning for a number of reasons, including being out of position, weak valve spring pressure, lack of oil pressure, or stressful operating conditions like over speeding.
