How Does the Diesel Engine Unit Pump System Work?

First, we're going to talk a little bit about how these types of systems work.

The electronic unit pump system we're looking at today is for the Mack E7. We often see these types of systems on smaller diesel engines, like compact tractors.

It's really an individual PFR. This component goes into the side of the block and it runs off the camshaft. We may still have a camshaft, but we've taken the injection pump and basically broken it down to six individual injection pumps. They can all be serviced individually.

So, on an inline six pump system, if one part fails, you're still looking at a pretty complicated repair. You have to tear it all down, and it'll take about 9-10 hours to rebuild that pump.

This particular pump for the Mack E7 usually has two bolts in a fuel line. That means you can just pull it out and put in a new one. So, you have a system that has better serviceability, less cost, and is easier to diagnose issues with.

When the shift from inline to unit pumps began, it was probably most common to see them on Mack and Mercedes engines.

These systems are more service-friendly, especially for people who aren't familiar with pulling injection pumps off, timing the pump, and everything else that goes into the repair.

Diagnosis is also easier, as you can pull the piece off and swap it from hole to hole to see if the problem follows. This allows you to see where the bad portion of the system is.

We get a lot of calls from customers about their pumps, asking: "How do I line the gears up?" or "How do I time this?" This pump system takes away these problems.

The established unit pump systems and unit injector systems are suitable for use in large engines generating up to 350 kilowatts per cylinder. The systems achieve a low fuel consumption by preparing the mixture efficiently to subsequently improve combustion. This can contribute toward compliance with emission regulations.

The electronically controlled injection pump UP installed on each engine cylinder on the unit pump system has a high precision design that guarantees the reliable buildup of pressure. The nozzle holder assembly is responsible for injecting fuel.

The unit injector combines pressure generation and injection in a single compact component. The start and duration of the injection can be adapted according to requirements so that the quantity and pressure of the fuel is adequate even at low speeds. The electronic engine control unit controls all component functions on both systems.
