The Development of Variable Geometry Turbochargers

VGT technology continues to improve.

Cummins introduced the latest generation of VGT technology in 2021, and it provides a 5% increase in turbo efficiency. It also incorporates a multi-shroud design and improved wheel options, which give you higher turbine performance.

Early VGTs

Before the mid-2000s, the turbo design for diesel engines featured a fixed blade. These fixed blade turbos are still produced, but in general, diesel has advanced in technology and favors VGTs.

Ford used the VGT on their 6.0 Power Stroke, GM used the LLY Duramax, and it was the 6.7 Cummins for RAM.

Some components were unchanged on the VGT from the fixed vane. The compressor side, for instance, stayed pretty much the same.

The exhaust side, however, was radically different. It features a sequence of tear-shaped vanes inside the turbo housing that direct the exhaust flow to the turbine wheel, which slows it down or speeds it up.

Each manufacturer uses a unique design for their pivoting vane configuration.

Benefits of the VGT

In general, the VGT seems to be the most efficient power-boosting technology.

The sliding vane design is a single assembly along the center axis of the turbo, and this turbo produces a stronger airflow through a broader spectrum on engine operations. This gives the turbo more boost at lower RPMs.
