Are you looking for new injectors for your Cummins diesel engine and are wondering what’s up with XPI injectors?
In short, the XPI injector, or extreme pressure injector, is the latest evolution in fuel injector technology for Cummins diesel engines. Not all fuel injectors are built the same, and the XPI injector certainly sets itself apart from the crowd. It offers higher amounts of pressure and eliminates the need for an entire camshaft, but that’s not all that makes the XPI injector unique. We’re taking a look at the nozzle and needle assemblies in the XPI injectors and letting you in on some of the great benefits these injectors offer.
Components in XPI Injectors
Each XPI injector for the Cummins ISX has 28 unique components, with each of them featuring exact dimensions in microns. This unit of measurement is tiny—the average strand of human hair is about 70 microns thick.
Those are some precise components! And it means that they are very difficult to build correctly.

The Nozzle and Needle
Included in these 28 unique components are the nozzle and needle required in the injector assembly.
The XPI injector has a long needle that is matched, ensuring the needle fits correctly in the nozzle body. This fit is also measured in microns, ensuring that the injector doesn’t leak. This also optimizes fuel pressure for injection.
Problems From Failing Needles and Nozzles
If you experience any deterioration, compromising the needle to body fit, you might have power loss, fuel leakage, smoke, carbon buildup, turbo failure, or possibly even engine failure.
Because of this, reused needles and nozzle bodies will not deliver optimal engine performance.
You might be able to make used parts work, but they’re not going to be as long-lasting or efficient as buying a new injector that has been made with new nozzle assemblies.
We don’t want you to have to worry about this! Highway & Heavy Parts only sells XPI injectors with new nozzle assemblies.
Benefits of Buying XPI Injectors From HHP
One XPI injector is just like another, right?
Not necessarily.
Because XPI injectors are built to extremely tight tolerances to decrease the risk of failure or fuel contamination, it’s incredibly difficult to rebuild an XPI injector and make sure it works perfectly without specialized equipment.
Some places you buy from might only test the injectors on generic testing equipment. HHP only sells injectors tested on custom XPI testing equipment.
This means that when you shop at HHP, you’ll be getting OEM quality and all the benefits of buying from us—dedicated diagnostic assistance from our ASE Certified Sales Staff, Industry Leading Warranty Programs, and injectors from a parts supplier that is dedicated to getting you the right parts the first time.
That’s why we’re proud to be “America’s Trusted Diesel Engine Parts Supplier!”
