Common Causes Of Fuel Injector Failure

Have your diesel engine fuel injectors failed?

If they have, then you need to know just what caused the failure so you can get your engine back up and running as soon as possible. When it comes to fuel injector failures, a number of things can cause issues. Proper diagnosis and repair is critical to prevent the failure from happening again and again. In this post, we’re taking a look at some of the common signs of fuel injector failure and just what causes them. What Are the Common Signs of Fuel Injector Failure Even though fuel injectors are all a little different between engines, they have similar signs of failure. You might, for instance, have excessive smoke or a hard start. If the timing in the injector gets off, you could also notice a fuel knock. If you have a tip blown off your injector, you’ll probably see excessive smoke. How Does Engine Age Affect Fuel Injectors It’s possible that you might not even realize there’s something up with your injectors. You might have an engine that just hit a million miles, and all the fuel going through it over the years has caused it to wear. It might not be until you put on a new set of injectors that you really notice there was something going on. Suddenly, you’re getting a lot more power and great fuel mileage. Your engine might run better than it has since it was new. We hear this sometimes when customers are putting new injectors on their engines. Causes of Fuel Injector Failure So even though different injectors on different engines might be actuated or controlled differently, the signs of failure are actually very similar. An injector might, for instance, blow the tip. Often, this is caused by air or water in the fuel system. When you compare it with one with the tip still intact you’ll see a significant difference. You might also see internal engine failure causing an injector to fail. It may have dropped the valve, for instance. The spray holes might be completely smashed, but this failure might actually be secondary to a larger engine problem. In some cases, you can see the return spring for the plunger broken, likely from a lot of cycles or a lot of years on the engine, which happens occasionally.
