6 Habits Your Engine Wishes You’d Stop Doing

If your diesel engine could talk, it would probably have a few complaints.

Not because it’s a bad engine, but because some of the habits that seem completely harmless can slowly take a toll on the components inside it.

Major diesel engine failures don’t always start with one catastrophic event. Sometimes, they begin with an oil change that gets pushed back a little too long. A warning light that gets ignored because the truck still runs. A cooling system problem that doesn’t seem urgent. Or a replacement part chosen based on price rather than whether it’s right for the application.

None of those decisions necessarily destroys an engine overnight.

But repeated over thousands of miles and operating hours, small problems can become expensive ones.

The good news? Many of them are preventable.

Here are six everyday habits that could be shortening the life of your diesel engine—and what you can do differently.

1. Skipping or Stretching Oil Changes

Engine oil has a difficult job.

It creates a protective film between moving components, helps control friction and heat, carries contaminants to the filtration system, and provides lubrication to critical components throughout the engine.

That includes components such as your:

  • Crankshaft and bearings
  • Camshaft and related valve-train components
  • Pistons and cylinder walls
  • Turbocharger bearings

As oil accumulates contaminants and its additives become depleted, it becomes less effective at doing those jobs.

Stretching an oil change beyond the appropriate service interval doesn’t necessarily produce an immediate symptom. That’s part of what makes it easy to do.

The engine may continue running normally while internal wear gradually increases.

Over time, inadequate lubrication or contaminated oil can contribute to accelerated bearing wear, scoring, deposits, turbocharger problems, and other internal damage.

And there’s another important consideration: not every diesel engine should follow the exact same oil-change schedule.

Engine manufacturer recommendations, oil type, duty cycle, idle time, operating environment, and application can all affect the appropriate service interval.

Following the maintenance recommendations for your specific engine and operating conditions is much less expensive than replacing the components that depend on that oil.

2. Ignoring the Engine When It’s Trying to Tell You Something

Your engine can’t talk, but it does communicate.

The problem is that we’re not always listening.

Some warning signs are obvious. Others are easy to dismiss, especially when the truck or equipment still starts, runs, and gets the job done.

Pay attention to changes such as:

  • New or unusual engine noises
  • Excessive or unusual exhaust smoke
  • Warning lights
  • Unexplained coolant loss
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Reduced power
  • Changes in operating temperature
  • Changes in oil pressure
  • Hard starting or rough operation

None of these symptoms automatically means you’re headed for a catastrophic engine failure. But they do mean something has changed.

And that’s worth investigating.

For example, repeatedly adding coolant without determining where it’s going doesn’t correct the problem. Continuing to operate an engine that’s running hotter than normal doesn’t address whatever caused the temperature change.

A relatively manageable problem can become much more expensive when operation continues long enough for it to affect other components.

Catching problems early gives you more options.

3. Constantly Working the Engine at Its Limit

Diesel engines are built to work.

That doesn’t mean operating conditions don’t matter.

Heavy loads, towing, high temperatures, steep grades, extended idle time, and demanding duty cycles can all increase stress on an engine. The engine may be designed to handle demanding work, but the harder the application, the more important proper operation and maintenance become.

One habit worth avoiding is lugging the engine.

Lugging occurs when the engine is placed under a heavy load at an engine speed that’s too low for the demand being placed on it. Instead of selecting an appropriate gear or operating range, the engine is forced to pull hard at low RPM.

That can increase cylinder pressures and place additional stress on internal components.

Repeated overheating is another warning sign that shouldn’t become an accepted part of operation. If an engine regularly runs hotter than it should under load, investigate why rather than treating it as normal simply because the truck keeps moving.

The lesson isn’t to avoid making your diesel engine work.

It’s to operate it within the appropriate range and maintain it for the work you’re asking it to do.

4. Shutting the Engine Down Immediately After Heavy Operation

You finish a hard pull, reach your destination, park, and shut the engine off.

Depending on the engine and operating conditions, that immediate shutdown may not be ideal for the turbocharger.

A turbocharger can operate at extremely high speeds and temperatures. Engine oil provides lubrication and also helps carry heat away from the turbocharger’s bearing system.

After demanding operation, shutting the engine down immediately stops that oil circulation while the turbocharger and surrounding components may still be very hot.

On applications where the manufacturer recommends a cooldown period, allowing the engine to idle briefly before shutdown gives temperatures an opportunity to stabilize while oil continues circulating through the turbocharger.

However, this doesn’t mean every diesel engine needs to sit and idle for several minutes after every drive. Modern engines and turbocharger systems vary considerably.

The best practice is to follow the shutdown procedure recommended for your particular engine and pay particular attention after sustained heavy-load or high-temperature operation.

It’s a small operating habit that can help protect a very expensive component.

5. Treating Routine Maintenance as Optional

Oil changes get most of the attention, but they’re only one piece of preventative diesel engine maintenance.

The engine depends on multiple systems working correctly together.

Routine maintenance can include:

Fuel filters: Contaminated fuel can create problems for precision fuel-system components.

Air filters and intake systems: The engine needs clean, unrestricted air. Intake restrictions can affect performance, while leaks that allow unfiltered air into the engine can contribute to accelerated internal wear.

Cooling system: Coolant level is only part of the picture. Coolant condition, concentration, system integrity, hoses, thermostats, water pumps, radiators, and other components all play a role in controlling engine temperature.

Belts and hoses: A relatively inexpensive belt or hose can create a much larger problem if its failure causes overheating or disables another critical system.

Valve adjustments and other scheduled services: Depending on the engine, additional maintenance procedures may be required at specific intervals.

Preventative maintenance can sometimes feel expensive because you’re spending money while the engine is still running properly.

But that’s exactly the point.

You’re spending a relatively small amount to help prevent a much larger repair.

6. Choosing the Cheapest Part Instead of the Right Part

When something does need to be replaced, price matters.

But it shouldn’t be the only consideration.

Diesel engine components have to operate under significant heat, pressure, vibration, and load. Fitment, materials, manufacturing quality, tolerances, and application all matter.

An inexpensive component isn’t a bargain if it doesn’t fit correctly, doesn’t perform properly, or contributes to another failure.

Just as importantly, even a high-quality part can cause problems if it’s simply the wrong part for the engine.

Diesel engine applications can vary by serial number, configuration, model year, CPL, arrangement number, or other engine-specific information. Two engines that look nearly identical may require different components.

That’s why verifying fitment before ordering is so important.

When you’re replacing an internal engine component, think beyond the purchase price.

Consider the cost of labor, downtime, repeat disassembly, lost productivity, and the potential damage to surrounding components if something goes wrong.

Saving a little on the part isn’t much of a savings if you have to perform the repair twice.

Small Habits Can Become Expensive Repairs

There’s a common theme behind all six of these habits:

The damage usually doesn’t happen all at once.

One late oil change probably isn’t going to immediately destroy an engine. One hard pull isn’t necessarily going to cause a failure. And one unusual noise doesn’t automatically mean your engine needs an overhaul.

The problem is what happens when small issues become normal habits.

Maintenance gets postponed again.

The warning light stays on.

The engine keeps losing coolant.

The unusual noise gets a little louder.

Eventually, the problem you could have addressed earlier may affect bearings, pistons, liners, cylinder heads, turbochargers, injectors, crankshafts, or other major components.

That’s when the cost changes dramatically.

Preventative Maintenance vs. Reactive Repair

It’s easy to think of maintenance as a cost.

A better way to look at it is as protection for an asset you’ve already invested in.

Oil, filters, coolant-system maintenance, inspections, and scheduled services all cost money. But so do towing, lost operating time, labor, cylinder heads, turbochargers, injectors, inframe rebuild kits, and complete engine repairs.

And the repair invoice isn’t always the biggest cost.

Preventative maintenance can’t eliminate every engine failure. Components eventually wear, unexpected failures happen, and operating environments aren’t always controllable.

But good maintenance and operating habits can reduce avoidable wear, help identify problems earlier, and give critical engine components the best opportunity to reach their intended service life.

Your diesel engine may not be able to talk, but it’s constantly giving you information.
