Not every fuel injector is built the same. When you’re looking to replace the injectors on your Cummins engine, we know you want the best.
That’s where the XPI injector (extreme pressure injector) comes in. It separates itself from the crowd by being the latest evolution of injectors for Cummins diesel engines.
In this article, we’re looking at the evolution of fuel injectors for Cummins engines and just what makes XPI injectors stand out.
How Injectors for Cummins Engines Have Changed
Through the years, Cummins injectors have seen some changes. Beginning with the pressure-timed injectors and ending with the new XPI injectors, there have been four iterations since their inception.
Pressure Timed Injectors
A pressure-timed injector is a mechanical injector. It’s fed by a low-pressure pump and is camshaft actuated.
The injectors are operated by the third love on the camshaft. Similar to most other injectors, the amount of fuel they get is determined by the fuel pump, and the camshaft determines the timing.
Celect Fuel Injectors
You’ll find Celect Fuel Injectors on Cummins N14s. On these injectors, the injection pressure is generated by the camshaft, and they have an electronic actuator.
An electronic actuator completes a simple but vital task: they control the opening and closing of the injector nozzle based on the ECM command signal. This affects fuel timing and volume.
HPI Injectors
The next injectors we saw, the HPI, or high-pressure injectors, were for the Cummins ISX.
On these, the injection pressure is generated by the camshaft and features and electronic actuator. This makes them similar to both the pressure timed and HPI injectors.
They also have significant differences, though, in the form of the electronics. The timing and metering functions are removed from the injector and mounted on the side of the engine.
Because of this change, the three injectors share one timing and one metering actuator.
The HPI Dual Cam fuel injectors for the Cummins ISX fit ISX engines built up to the year 2010.
About the XPI Single Cam Injectors
Now we have the latest in fuel injection technology, the XPI Single Cam Injectors.
This injector differs from the ones that came before because it offers higher pressure while eliminating the need for an entire camshaft from the engine.
It’s possible that the XPI injector is the best injector we’ve ever seen. So, what’s the drawback?
In the past, there has not been a quality-built alternative that’s reasonably priced. These injectors used to be available from the OEM only.
Not anymore.
