Replacing your cylinder head is a big job. And you want to make sure it’s done correctly to keep your engine running at its best.

Guidelines for Installing a Diesel Engine Cylinder Head
1. Clean the Block and Components
The first thing you should do is make sure your engine block has been completely cleaned. Dirt and debris can lead to component damage during operation, you want to remove as much of it as possible.
To keep debris from moving through your engine, clean any additional components before you install them as well.
2. Install Dowel Pins
Next, tap your dowel pins into place on the engine block. Ensure that there is no burring on the pins. This, too, could cause you problems later on.
3. Install the Head Gasket
The head gasket needs to be properly oriented on the engine block. Your manufacturer’s instructions can help you figure out how to do this.
A gasket that isn’t oriented the right way won’t seal, which creates combustion issues.
You’ll also need to make sure that the bolt holes have been properly cleaned.
You probably won’t need to use adhesive to position the gasket, but this ultimately depends on the gasket material.
4. Position the Cylinder Head
To avoid damaging your head, use alignment dowels and evenly lower the head into position.
5. Install Head Bolts
Your bolts should be clean, the correct length, and not worn. Follow the manufacturer recommended torque guidelines.
6. Install Any Remaining Components
Finally, install any remaining components, depending on your engine model. This can include push rods, rocker arm assembly, camshaft, etc.
Common Cylinder Head Install Mistakes
Incorrect install can result in engine damage. Some common mistakes to avoid include:
Using Worn Fasteners.
Take a look at your fasteners before you install them. If you notice any wear or pitting, we recommend not reusing them, as this can lead to failure.
You’ll also want to inspect your new fasteners, because accidentally installing a bent or warped one, can cause problems as well.
The fasteners should be straight and free of wear. You want to make sure you have the proper length fasteners to ensure everything fits together correctly.
Don’t use bolts that have stretched beyond their limit, or ones that are one time use only.
Should I Use Sealant on the Gasket?
It’s unlikely that you’ll need to use sealant on your gasket. In fact, depending on what material your gasket is made of, sealant could actually cause it to deteriorate and fail. Be sure to verify what material your gasket is and whether or not sealant is necessary.
Head Gasket Seals
It’s important that the head gasket seals properly. Leaks in the head gasket can let oil get into the cylinders, which leads to high oil consumption.
Make sure you pay attention to orientation marks and manufacturer instructions to help make sure you’re getting a proper seal.
You’ll also want to check the liner protrusion and make sure it’s in spec before you install the head. If the liner protrusion is incorrect, you may experience premature gasket failure. You may even have to replace the head again.
