How Do I Return My Cores?

Often, when you purchase a remanufactured diesel engine part, you’ll have a core charge attached to the bill. This can be frustrating, as it makes the total purchase seem more expensive.

You should get that money returned to you, though, as long as you ship back the core.

To get that refund, though, you need to ensure you’re correctly shipping back the part. This allows it to be processed quickly so you can get your money.

We want to make this process as pain-free as possible, so this article is taking you through how to ship a core back to Highway & Heavy Parts.

What Exactly is a Core Charge?

Basically, the core charge is money held in reserve so that manufacturers can ensure they’re getting the old part back.

Often, on a listing, you’ll see the base price of the component, and then there will be an additional charge added to the purchase.

For example, a $1,000 turbo might have a $500 core charge. This means you’ll be paying $1,500 right away for the part.

This probably seems like a scam, but you should get your $500 back just for sending in your old part. You receive the new turbo, put the old one back in the box, and send it back.

You’ll get your $500 once it’s been received and approved, bringing the total purchase back down to $1,000.

Why Do You Need My Old Parts?

It does seem a little odd that anyone wants your old or worn parts, but cores are where remanufactured parts come from. Without cores, there wouldn’t be any old parts to remanufacture.

That’s how companies figure the amount for the core charge: it’s how much it would cost them to buy another old core. Manufacturers want to be able to remanufacture and sell that part again.

In the end, returning cores is good for everyone, providing you with the option to purchase remanufactured parts instead of new ones.

How Do I Ship My Core Back to HHP?

We want to help make sure you’re getting your core charge back, and a big part of it is shipping the core back correctly.

Following a purchase from HHP that involves a core charge, we will email a return authorization form and prepaid shipping documents to use for returning the core. Please be sure to print these for use in the package.

To prepare your core for shipping, drain any oil or fluids from it, making sure it’s clean and dry. Then, put the unit back in the original box.

Put the return authorization form inside with the core and tape, palletize, or band the package as necessary.

The shipping labels should go on the outside of the package, and if a bill of lading was supplied, print it and keep it with the shipment.

At this point, the core is ready to ship back to us. Be sure to ship using the carrier on the labels provided.

You must ship your core within 45 days of receiving the paperwork in the email. It’s possible that the core needs to be examined to determine if it’s acceptable.

If it’s accepted, you’ll receive a credit through the original payment method. This may take 3-4 weeks, but we try to get you your credit faster whenever possible.
