The camshaft helps drive your diesel engine. So, when it or its associated parts are malfunctioning, you need to get to the root of the problem right away.
But we all know that camshaft repairs can be expensive, easily running up to $4,000 or more. You might just think that that’s the price to pay to get the job done.
When you do a camshaft repair, you often have to replace the rocker levers as well. These can be expensive parts in their own right, driving up the cost of your repair job.
What if we told you that there might be an alternative that could save you time and money? And it’s a high-quality repair that will help keep your engine running great.
In this post, we’re going through this repair option, to help you decide if it’s the right choice for your diesel engine.
What Are Rocker Levers?
Rocker levers, sometimes called rocker arms or even just rockers, are the pivoting arm that pushes the valve stem.
The exact way these are set up depends on your engine and its valve train. You might have one where the camshaft lobes push directly on the rocker arm. Or, they might push on the push rods, which then conduct the motion up to the rocker arm.
In overhead cam engines, though, the cam follower is built into the rocker arm as a roller.
Does the Rocker Lever Need to Be Replaced?
If you notice wear on your camshaft lobes, there’s a chance that you’ll also see wear on the followers or rollers in your rocker arm. Those will need to be replaced.
A lot of people assume, then, that the entire rocker arm needs to be replaced. Often, this was the only way the components were sold.
But, in reality, if your rocker arm is still in good shape and undamaged, you won’t need to replace the entire assembly.
That’s where the pin and roller kit comes in.
Is a Pin and Roller Kit Right For Your Engine?
As we mentioned, depending on the issue with your rocker levers, a new pin or roller might be just the thing you need to get your camshaft repair done.
It’s especially useful if you haven’t experienced any damage to the rocker lever.
Loud noises inside your engine might be caused by a broken pin. This issue can even cause massive damage to your camshaft.
But, if you replace just the pin, you get a quality repair that isn’t going to cost you a fortune.
New pins and rollers can help extend the life of your camshaft. In the right situations, they might be just the fix for your engine.
