Home » Rocker Lever Issues In Your Overhead Cam Engine
If you have an overhead cam engine—a Detroit Diesel Series 60, a Cummins ISX, a Caterpillar 3406E or C15, for example—you might have some questions about rocker levers.
We get them all the time. People want to know what their options are and what we have available.
In this post, we’re taking you through what solutions we have for your issues. From a roller gone bad to a camshaft failure, we’re here to help you find the right fix for your problem!
What Options Do We Have Available?
1. A Pin and Roller Kit
If all your levers are good and you only have one bad roller, a pin and roller kit might be what you need to get everything running great again!
It’s a simple matter of pressing the pin out, putting the new pin in, and putting in a new roller.
A pin and roller kit is a great option if the lever itself isn’t damaged. This helps to keep your repair costs down.
2. New Rocker Lever Assembly
Sometimes, the wear might be too significant for just a pin and roller kit.
This might be the case if your pin and rollers are all worn. Or, if you’ve had some oil contamination, which wears components, including the center bushing. (Oil contamination happens anytime something other than oil is in your oil supply.)
Oil contamination can be caused by debris in the engine, or a fault somewhere else in the engine that fluids get into.
In cases like this, it would take a lot of components to get the rocker lever good again. So, a new or reman rocker lever assembly will probably be what you’re looking for.
3. Used Parts
In some cases, the parts you need might not be available to rebuild the levers. In situations like that, you might have to explore used parts to get everything working again.
If you have a Series 60 Detroit with a ceramic roller, for example, you might run into some problems. Those parts aren’t available in the aftermarket.
But, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck. Often, we’ll have a dismantled engine with low hours and great components. So, we’d be able to sell you a solid used part.
