The fuel injector. It’s one of the most vital and most complicated components in your diesel engine.

It pressurizes the fuel and injects it as a fine mist into the combustion chamber. It relies on precise timing to help your engine achieve the ideal fuel usage.
But it also needs to withstand intense operating conditions.
Because of all these factors, it’s likely that at some point in the life of your engine, you’ll experience problems with your injectors.
In this post, we’re going through a few options you have when your injectors fail.
About Fuel Injector Failure
Symptoms of Fuel Injector Problems
As we mentioned, fuel injectors are very complicated components, which results in a lot of possible failure points.
Some things you should keep an eye out for include:
- Loss of Engine Power
- Hard Start
- Smoking
- Knocking
- Rough Running
- Poor Fuel Efficiency
What Causes Fuel Injector Problems?
The above symptoms could be caused by a few different problems, including worn injectors and cracks. That means you need to diagnose your specific problem carefully.
If you’re having a problem with your fuel injector, you have a few different repair options, depending on your specific issue.
These options include purchasing a repair kit or replacing them with remanufactured injectors.
Reasons to Rebuild a Fuel Injector
What is a Fuel Injector Repair Kit?
Purchasing a fuel injector repair kit is something you can do to help solve some fuel injector issues. These kits allow you to rebuild the injector yourself.
You can choose from different kits, depending on the type of damage you’re working with. Some will replace just the seals if you’re having issues with leaks, and others will include most of the major components in the fuel injector to help address larger issues.
Choosing the right kit depends entirely on the type of damage or problem you’re having.
What Can An Injector Repair Kit Fix?
For the most part, a repair kit can help you fix a lot of minor issues with your injectors, especially general wear and leaking seals. Using a repair kit in addition to a good cleaning to get rid of any clogs can keep your injectors running great.
It does take a little time and effort on your part, but it can save you money if the damage doesn’t really call for new injectors.
These kits aren’t designed to take care of major injector failures, though, and you won’t be getting the same testing and guarantees as you would from buying new or reman injectors.
When Is It Time For Remanufactured Injectors?
Sometimes a repair kit just won’t be enough to fix your issue. For example, they aren’t designed to take care of cracks in the injector.
In these cases, you might want to take a look at reman injectors.
What Does the Remanufacturing Process Entail?
The remanufacturing process can vary between companies, but is usually quite intensive. Not all remanned injectors are equal, though, and you want to make sure you’re getting the best quality.
To reman an injector, it has to be taken apart, thoroughly cleaned, and inspected. If you’re buying a quality part, all the old components will have been replaced with new ones, ensuring maximum lifespan.
Replaced components can include:
- Actuator assemblies
- Spill valves
- Solenoid
- NOP springs
- Washer, screw, and stop
Injectors should also be tested for leaks and functionality.
