You’ve heard it before. Turbochargers are vital to the overall performance of your diesel engine.
They can help your diesel engine produce higher outputs and improve engine efficiency. When your engine runs, your turbo gets to work.
It’s important your turbo runs smoothly and efficiently to maintain the overall health of your engine. Turbo maintenance should be high on your priority list.
To that end, we’ve put together some tips to help you keep your turbo healthy.

Ways to Keep Your Turbo Healthy
There are some rather simple ways to help maintain your turbo’s efficiency. These include:
Clean Oil
Just like with the rest of your engine, you’re going to want clean oil going through your turbocharger.
You’ve probably heard how important it is to change your oil regularly for the overall health of your engine, but dirty oil can actually harm a turbo faster than any other component in your diesel engine.
Turbos are susceptible to this kind of damage mainly because of how fast they spin. Your turbo can spin as fast as 112,000 RPM, with the oil being the only thing keeping lubricated and preventing metal-on-metal contact.
Metal rubbing on metal could create big problems, so it’s important your oil stays clean.
Clean Air Filter
Similarly, having clean air filters is important to the overall health of your turbocharger.
Clean air filters help prevent soot and debris from building up and becoming bigger problems in your engine.
You should both change your oil and replace your air filters to save both your turbos and your diesel engine as a whole.
Slower Acceleration
Some people might not be aware that acceleration can have an impact on the health of the turbo as well. Stomping on the throttle can be taxing on the turbo, causing it to work harder.
This makes the turbo wear out faster than it normally would.
Avoiding a lead foot and trying to accelerate slowly can help your turbos work better and last longer.
Clean Your Turbo
Another preventative measure to take is cleaning your turbo. This can help it last longer, as soot and carbon can build up which can cause sticking and erratic performance.
A few products on the market can be sprayed through the air intake to lock onto soot particles, breaking them down. This helps keep your turbo running smoothly.
