Tech Tips: Install ISX Injectors

If you own a diesel engine, it’s likely that you’ll need to replace your fuel injectors at some point.

Some people like to tackle this job on their own. If this sounds like you, it’s important that you know the right way to go about installing injectors in your engine.

This post focuses on how to install injectors in your Cummins ISX engine.

How to Install Your Injectors

The exact install we’ll be referencing is for an ISX 871, but the general process should be similar for other ISXs. The exact guidelines might differ, so refer to your manual for further information.

Before Installing the Injector

The installation starts with the injector out of the cylinder head, following whatever other repair you completed (replacing a head gasket, doing an in-frame overhaul, etc.).

If you’re planning to reuse your injectors, you’ll still want to replace your o-rings. You’ll find these included in an overhaul kit or upper gasket set.

It’s important to note that the rings come in different sizes, so make sure you’re getting the right o-ring in the right groove for proper fit. Using an o-ring hook can help with this.

You’ll want to be sure to clean the bore of the injector hole with a brush.

It’s also helpful to wrap a shop towel on the brush after the initial clean and use it to clear away any remaining soot or debris. The towel helps to pick up the things the brush left behind.

It’s not recommended to blow into the bore of the injector hole, though, as you might accidentally push debris into the combustion chamber, leading to problems for your engine later on.

Then you need to lube the o-rings on the injector with engine oil before you put in the injector hold down. This means the bolt hole for the injector hold down will be clear of oil or debris and it helps prevent it from achieving torque before it’s actually tight.

Installing the Injector

First, be sure to carefully align your injector in the injector bore. Then, place your hold down over the injector and start the cap screw. The injector hold down will pull the injector into the bore.

On the ISX 871, these injectors are torqued to 59 foot-pounds, but you’ll need to make sure you’re using the correct number for your ISX. You can look it up on Quick Serve online, or in a shop manual for the ISX engine.

Once your injector is properly torques in the cylinder head, it’s time to install the rocker shaft assemblies. Then, you need to set the valve injector settings.
