Valve Keeper And Retainer Failure

We know that when there’s a failure in your diesel engine, you want to know what went wrong and what needs to be done to get it fixed right.

Many components can cause issues in your engine, so properly diagnosing the issue is key to a proper repair: you don’t want to be treating a symptom without addressing the entire problem. That means you’ll have even more downtime when the failure happens again—and you’ll end up spending more money.

We’ve talked about many different causes of diesel engine failure before, including failures that affect your valves and corresponding components. In this post, we’re taking a look at the valve keepers and valve retainers and what they can tell you about your valve failure. If you need to know how these components can fail and what causes them to fail, we’re doing an in-depth look at just those questions. How Valve Keepers and Valve Retainers Can Fail Like any other component in your diesel engine, there are multiple ways your valves can fail. One likely culprit is from impact loading. Here’s what to look for to see if impact loading might be causing your problems. Impact Loading Causes Failure When you’re inspecting your valves for the cause of failure, take a look at the retainers and rotators. If they are undamaged and functioning properly, then take a look at the valve stems. If the valve stems show no galling then they did not seize in the valve guide. Be sure to note the location of the break on your valve. If the break occurs on the valve head, the failure has to be from impact. This is the strongest part of the valve, so damage from another source is unlikely. This is especially true if you notice additional valves bent in the same place. This would not occur with other types of possible issues like sticking in the guide or broken valve retainers. In instances like this, where both valves are bent and damaged in a similar manner, it’s most likely that the piston hit the valves, not some random piece of foreign material. This points to impact loading as the root cause of your failure. Highway & Heavy Parts Can Help!
