What Are EUIs?

Fuel injectors are a vital component in your diesel engine. And it can spell trouble for the overall health of your engine when they’re not working right.

We want to help you figure out what’s going on in your engine and get you back up and running fast.

Fuel injectors differ between engine types. Properly diagnosing your problem is key to getting the right part for repair, and that means knowing what type of injectors you have. In this post, we’re talking about the difference between electronically-controlled unit injectors and mechanical injectors and what problems you might experience. What Are EUIs? You might be wondering what the difference between electronically-controlled unit injectors (EUIs) and mechanical injectors is. Essentially, an EUI is a fuel injector that relies on electronic signals to tell it when to inject fuel. A mechanical injector, on the other hand, relies on pressure in the line to trigger the fuel release. Manufacturing EUIs For a long time, mechanical injectors were found in most diesel engines. But, around 1994, many major diesel engine manufacturers, like Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel, began to move away from this type of injector. The 3406E and the Series 60 were the first engines from this brand where EUIs were used. Why did they make the switch? Because EUIs offered more precision in the fuel system. Why Are EUIs More Precise Than Mechanical Injectors? With a mechanical injector, you’re only getting fuel dispersed according to the line pressure. This can lead to injection lag or uneven fuel distribution if the pressure is not uniformly applied. The EUI changes that. It is controlled electronically, which allows it to release the correct amount of fuel, normally in a finer spray than the mechanical injector. This increases atomization and improves fuel economy. The mechanical fuel injector has a fixed injector timing, but the EUI has flexibility from electronically controlled timing. This leads to better performance, fuel economy, and lower emissions. Common Issues With EUI Injectors The issues you might experience with EUIs can be different depending on what engine model you have. In some, water or air contamination can cause the injector tip to crack or break off. In others, you might see poor injector seating allowing fuel or heat past the injector cup, which causes premature wear on the injector. Like with many other types of failure, it’s important to properly diagnose the cause of your injector failure to prevent it from happening again with your new injectors.
