What are the advantages of VGTs?

It’s probably hard to believe that Variable Geometry Turbos have any advantages. They have a bad reputation as a big source of problems in the diesel world.

You probably know someone who got so fed up with the system that they deleted their engine. That might even be you.

But, we’re here to tell you that we’ve finally gotten to a point with VGT technology where these turbos are actually a benefit to your engine.

In this post, we’re going through just what benefits these turbos can bring to your system.

Common VGT Problems

As we mentioned, VGTs have a history of being troublesome. They’ve failed often and can be expensive to replace.

Some common failures you might have encountered include excessive oil consumption, mechanical faults, or electrical faults.

Excessive Oil Consumption

It’s possible that you notice some excessive oil consumption with your VGT. If that’s the case, there’s a good chance that it’s not caused by the turbo itself, but by a failure somewhere else in the engine.

A failed bearing, hot shutdown, or extended drain intervals with dirty oil could all lead to this problem.

Mechanical Faults

A mechanical problem could be caused by EGR issues or coolant/foreign object contamination.

Failures like these can stop your turbo from shifting from a big to a small turbo.

Electrical Faults

An electrical fault can occur with the VGT’s electric actuator.

Why VGTs Aren’t as Troublesome Now

Like many things, it comes down to quality. We carry a line of high-quality VGTs that you don’t have to worry about constantly failing.

They meet or exceed OEM specs to help keep you on the road longer.

A big problem in the past has been the OEMs keeping information to themselves. By not sharing their service parts topics, they can keep you coming to their shops, charging you $3,000-$5,000.

All for a turbo that continuously fails.

You don’t have to worry about that with our turbos. We can help you out with service topics and all the info you need to confidently buy a VGT.

We want to help stop your VGT problems.

VGT Advantages

It’s true. There’s some real advantages to having a VGT on your diesel engine.

First, a VGT can be both a big and small turbo all in one.

This means that rather than getting a sharp torque curve, you’ll see a curve that goes up and across. A broad torque curve like that, that gives you torque low and high, gives you better performance when carrying heavy loads.

You’ll also see improved engine braking. The turbo can choke off the exhaust housing, which helps the truck slow down better.

You also won’t feel as compelled to delete your engine. This means you’re not looking at fines and other punishments for breaking federal EPA regulations.

Deleting also limits the shops that will work on your engine—most shops won’t take a deleted engine any more, as they face fines as well.
