What Rebuild Options Do I Have For My Cummins ISX?

Choosing an Engine Rebuild Kit

Not all kits are the same, and what kind you need can depend on your reason for rebuilding in the first place. So, we won’t offer you a one-size-fits-all solution.

You can choose from three different levels of kit for the ISX engine depending on your needs. Some of our more popular kits are re-ring and inframe kits.

What is a Re-Ring Kit?

A re-ring kit might be a great option for you if your pistons are still in great shape.

You’ll be getting all of the standard rebuild components, but it doesn’t include pistons. They still come with piston rings, though, because you’ll always want to replace the rings when you work inside the cylinders.

This type of kit is called a re-ring kit because you put new rings on your current pistons.

You can install a re-ring kit while the engine block is still in the frame.

What is an Inframe Rebuild Kit? 

We see people most frequently buy inframe rebuild kits. One of our most popular kits for an ISX is an inframe kit.

An inframe kit covers a standard rebuild, but you’ll still be leaving the engine in the frame.

You’ll get everything you need for an overhaul, but it doesn’t include a lower engine gasket set.

For the most part, you’ll get these same components in most kits for the ISX. You might see the specific parts change, depending on your engine serial number.

Rebuild Kits for the ISX from HHP

Our kits come with everything you’d expect out of a kit for your ISX. This includes the current generation of piston design.

We’re talking forged steel, not cast, which gives them superior strength. They can take whatever your engine throws at them.

The forged pistons have an improved skirt profile and oil plate retention, and features piston rings with a coating to improve performance and oil control.

The cylinder liners in our kits have an induction-hardened plateau-honed finish, meaning your cylinder liners will have the optimum hone. You should also see less metal particles in your oil during the breakin after the rebuild.

You should then be able to have better sealing capacity with your newly rebuilt engine.

We also have Anti-Polish Ring Liners, but these are not interchangeable with previous liner types. They’re made for ISX15 Tier 4 XPI single cam engine models.

On these liners, you’ll have a removable, integrated carbon scraper ring at the top of the liner, which helps to prevent carbon from coming in contact with the cylinder walls.

If your piston has carbon buildup, then carbon can touch the cylinder walls, polishing the liner. A polished liner can cause excessive oil consumption, DPF regeneration, as well as a decrease in the oil filter flow.
